Data Foundations
CMDB & CSDM — Domain-by-domain study guide with exam tips, scenarios, and key takeaways.
Study Domains
75 questions · 90 min · 70% to passConfiguration
This domain validates your understanding of CMDB architecture, table hierarchy, class modeling, and CI data quality foundations. Strong mastery here is critical, as these concepts directly impact identification, reconciliation, and CSDM alignment.
Ingestion
The Ingestion domain covers how data flows into the CMDB from external sources. It covers three primary mechanisms: traditional Import Sets/Transform Maps, modern Service Graph Connectors, and the underlying Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE). Mastering these concepts is critical for data quality, consistency, and CSDM alignment.
Governance
Governance is the largest and most critical exam domain, focusing on establishing the processes, policies, and roles required to maintain the quality, trustworthiness, and usefulness of CMDB data over its entire lifecycle. It ensures the CMDB remains an accurate single source of truth for IT and business services.
Insight
The Insight domain tests your ability to extract actionable intelligence from the CMDB. This covers query tools, visualization, dashboards, analytics capabilities, and how CMDB data powers the broader ServiceNow platform.
CSDM Fundamentals
While CSDM Fundamentals is only 11% of the exam, understanding CSDM is critical for answering questions across ALL other domains. CSDM provides the framework for how data should be organized, and exam questions frequently present scenarios requiring CSDM domain placement decisions.

ServiceNow has made CIS-DF a mandatory prerequisite for seven other CIS certifications: CIS-ITSM, CIS-HRSD, CIS-Discovery, CIS-SAM, CIS-HAM, CIS-CSM, and CIS-VR. You must pass CIS-DF before registering for any of these exams. If you already hold any of these certifications, you must pass CIS-DF by December 31, 2026 to keep them active. The exam focuses on a governance-first mindset — it tests not just how to configure features, but why specific data management decisions matter for long-term platform health.
4-Week Study Plan
Configuration (15%) + CSDM (11%)
10–12 hrs
Study CI Class Manager, Principal Class, class hierarchy. Memorize CSDM domains, tables, personas, and Crawl-Walk-Run-Fly phases. Complete the Now Learning CSDM Fundamentals course.
Ingestion (19%)
12–15 hrs
Deep-dive into IRE: identification rules, reconciliation rules, data source precedence, data refresh rules. Study SGC vs. Import Sets vs. ETL. Understand CMDB 360 and sys_object_source. Practice identifying IRE processing steps.
Governance (35%)
15–18 hrs
Master the Three Cs in detail (Completeness, Correctness, Compliance). Study Data Manager policies end-to-end (Retire, Archive, Delete, Attestation). Understand lifecycle stages, duplicate remediation, orphan rules, staleness configuration. This is the most critical week.
Insight (20%) + Review
12–15 hrs
Study Query Builder, Unified Map, CSDM dashboards, NLQ. Take full-length practice tests. Review ALL scenario questions. Focus on weak areas. Do a final day review of key tables, roles, and definitions.
Exam Day Checklist
- Read every question TWICE. Scenario questions contain nuances that change the correct answer.
- For multi-select questions, select EXACTLY the number of options requested. Do not over-select.
- When choosing between two similar answers, pick the one aligned with governance principles and ServiceNow best practices.
- Remember the Three Cs: Completeness (fields filled?), Correctness (data accurate?), Compliance (rules met?).
- Business Application is NEVER operational. Application Service is ALWAYS where incidents go.
- Service Graph Connectors are ALWAYS preferred over custom Import Sets.
- IRE stops at the FIRST identification rule match. It does NOT continue evaluating lower-priority rules.
- Archive and Delete policies REQUIRE CIs to be in Retired state first.
- CMDB Health jobs are DISABLED by default — they must be enabled manually.
- Only ONE orphan rule per class is allowed. No orphan rules exist out-of-the-box.
- Lower reconciliation priority number = HIGHER authority (100 beats 200).
- De-duplication Task is created when IRE finds multiple matches — NO update occurs.
- The sys_object_source table maps external native keys to ServiceNow sys_ids.
- sn_cmdb_admin + personalize_dictionary roles required for CI class management.
- The CSDM Lifecycle Mapping tool synchronizes legacy status fields with new lifecycle_stage fields.
